Four hours later, Bull sat on his couch with a drowsy Skylar snuggled up against his side. She’d told him how much she loved his roomy apartment. It had three bedrooms and a huge living room that opened to the kitchen. It was modern, and she’d commented on how many safety measures were in place simply to get inside the building. There was a code to get into the parking garage, then another to get into the lobby. There was a security guard stationed there who checked everyone’s ID before they were allowed onto the elevator. Finally, Bull used a keycard to give the elevator access to his top-floor apartment.

Of course, he then had several locks on the actual door to his place.

Considering what he did for Silverstone, Bull wasn’t taking any chances with his safety. Or hers. He knew she thought it was overkill, but he didn’t care. No one would hurt her when she was with him. No one.

Eagle had shown up not too long after they’d gotten home and delivered the food from Mama Carolla’s. Bull hadn’t been sure what Skylar might want, so he’d ordered way too much food, but Italian was always better the next day anyway. They’d gorged themselves on fried ravioli, veal marsala, chicken involtini, and tiramisu for dessert. He loved that Skylar hadn’t picked at her food. She’d dug in, as if she hadn’t eaten in weeks.

And conversation had never lagged. Not once. They talked about her students, what she had planned for truck week starting on Monday, the jobs that he’d been on, and how Archer had come to be the newest employee at Silverstone Towing.

He’d suggested they watch a movie, and she’d agreed eagerly. They’d argued good-naturedly about what to watch, but Bull honestly didn’t give a shit. He was happy to sit next to Skylar and marvel at the fact that she was there at all.

In the end, she’d decided on Central Intelligence with Kevin Hart and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. He’d seen it several times and enjoyed it. But he liked it even more watching it with Skylar. She freely giggled and gasped . . . and by the end, she was practically sitting on his lap.

It was ten o’clock, and as much as she was attempting to pretend otherwise, it was obvious Skylar was exhausted. Bull wanted to be selfish and keep talking to her, maybe even put in another movie and have her fall asleep on him. He hated the thought of returning her to her crappy apartment complex, but knew he didn’t have a choice.

“You tired?” he asked.

“Mmmmm.”

After chuckling, Bull kissed the top of her head. “I should get you home.”

“Carson?”

“Right here, sweetheart.”

“Do you want to come to my parents’ with me next weekend?”

“Do you want me to come to your parents’ with you next weekend?” he asked.

She looked up at him, and even in the dim light he could see how beautiful her green eyes were. Right now they seemed as if they were a dark-forest hue.
